The Florida Gators enter the 2016 season with a former Alabama quarterback at the helm. It was announced Thursday that Luke Del Rio has been named starter for the season-opener.
Del Rio has been battling with Purdue transfer Austin Appleby and true freshman Feleipe Franks this summer and he has at least won the starting job for the season opener. He will get the chance to prove himself against the UMass Minutemen.
“Luke is going to work as the starter the rest of camp and start in the season opener barring any unforeseen development,” McElwain said.
“Our other quarterbacks remain in the plans and are ready to move forward and help the Gators any way they can.”
Del Rio, a redshirt sophomore, has been the front-runner for the job with the Gators since the spring game, in which he went 10-11 with 176 yards and two touchdowns. He had minimal experience playing at Oregon State last year, where he recorded 144 yards on eight completions.
The Gators and Minutemen meet up at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Sept. 3.
