During Saturday’s season-opening loss to the Wisconsin Badgers, LSU offensive lineman Josh Boutte delivered a devastating hit to Wisconsin defensive back D’Cota Dixon well after the play was dead.
It was called by many one of the worst cheap shots you will ever see. (Video here.)
On Monday, after reviewing video of the play, LSU head coach Les Miles announced the program has decided to suspend Boutte for this weekend’s home opener against Jacksonville State.
“Josh made a mistake and will serve a one game suspension because of it,” Miles said in a statement from the LSU athletic department. “Even though this was done by mistake, a play like this does not belong in the game of football and therefore action must be taken.
“This play does not define Josh as a person and is not indicative of the type of player he is. We sincerely apologize for his mistake.”
According to Miles, Boutte also called Dixon to apologize from the hit.
When you review the play further, there is some room for understanding the possibility that Boutte was unaware the play was over. After all, he was previously engaged in blocking downfield and the next thing he knew a defender was running in his direction.
Unfortunately, the play was late and could have caused serious injury, so a suspension had to be handed down.
LSU and Jacksonville State are set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
