College Athletics: A Day in the Life of a Female Soccer Player

The day starts off with my alarm sounding at 5:30am, urging me to get up for a lovely 6am workout. The sun hasn’t come up yet, so I’m forced to drive through the darkness while dreading what type of run and life we’d have to get through.

Warm up began with two simple laps to loosen up, which were actually a lot harder than they should’ve been. That followed with 15 more minutes of wasting precious energy that could be used for the 300s we were about to run.

We had to run a 300 five different times, and die a little bit with each run. Maybe throw up a little, too. Once that’s in the books, we got “blessed” with a full body lift. It’s nothing to be happy about — an awful set of squats followed by box jumps. Apparently, I’m not getting low enough and the trainer yells as such. But my Nicki Minaj backend already struggles fitting into my size 28 jeans, so let’s not push it.

After getting through the workout, breakfast and a much-needed coffee is necessary, followed by a nap before going off to a day’s worth of classes.

I get up right before class starts, which means I head in there in a full gray sweatsuit with my hair in a bun and no makeup on. Classmates give me that “is she homeless?” look, but they have no idea what I went through this morning before the sun came up.

Two of my friends even saw me on campus and asked if I was OK. How do you explain to someone you just look this ugly in real life?

Class is overrated and the girls who dress up for class clearly feel I shouldn’t have even come. Thankfully, practice was in an hour where I’d see my real friends. They really understand me.

I finally make it to practice, only to find out it’s “GET AFTER IT” day.

WOOOOO.

Yet another 15 minutes wasted with a warmup I don’t need followed by an hour and a half of straight playing. If you lost, the punishment was more running. With my luck, I ended up on the short end most of the time.

With a second practice in the books, it was time to run home for a quick shower. My hair wasn’t washed because it’s been getting real dry from showering so frequently. So, I put on a hat to cover that up along with my no-makeup face and head to finance tutoring.

Both the hat and tutoring seemed pretty pointless.
My sore muscles ventured over to the training table next. There was free food, which was awesome. What wasn’t awesome was that it may have not been suitable for even dogs to eat.

Finally, the day is done and I get to head home to catch up on the latest episode of The Bachelorette. Why is that a show that I waste time watching? Because most of my day is so realistic that I enjoy seeing how unrealistic it actually is.

A lot of effort is put into falling asleep early, but that nap has me wide awake. Naturally, that leads to me binge-watching Gossip Girl until I’m tired enough to call it a day. That usually happens around midnight.

Good thing, because I get to wake up the next morning and do it all over again.
