Snow Day 2015: UGA’s Latest Let Down

Sunday, February 15th – the University of Georgia student body was on the edge of their seats. With weeklong speculations of snow and ice, the Bulldawg Nation anxiously awaited what was sure to be Snowpocalyse Round 2. Anticipating our snow day shenanigans, Athens was eager to zip up our backpacks and shut down our laptops. Now, if this isn’t making much sense to you, let me remind you, I’m talking about Georgia – where snow days are equivalent to winning the lottery – pretty freaking awesome.

But of course, Monday morning rolls around and Athens woke up to an uncomfortable drizzle and a disappointingly close-to-making-our-dreams-come-true 34°. As we carried on with our days, trying not to fall victim to the depressing reality of Mother Nature’s mind games, there seemed no escape from our day-to-day monotony of attending class and mindlessly taking notes. But then at 6:22pm, it happened. A wave of excitement hit Athens so hard, it brought back memories of Herschel trampling Tennessee’s helpless Bill Bates as our Heisman hero marched into the end zone – class was cancelled.

In an Arch News email issued to all UGA faculty, staff, and students, we learned “The University of Georgia will close due to inclement weather . . . Classes will resume on a normal schedule at 10 a.m. Wednesday.” While that quote was pulled directly from the email, the student body interpreted it more along the lines of “stop what you’re doing this instant and throw on a jacket, because we’re hitting Clayton Street… hard.”

But then came the next email. Titled “Correction to closing announcement,” our hearts sank. This email oh-so joyously read, “The University of Georgia will close due to inclement weather . . . Classes will resume on a normal schedule at 10 a.m. TUESDAY.” That’s right folks – whoever’s job it was to send out an alert to 36,922 people failed to read over their email, delivering a devastating blow to the wonderful people that make this University so great.

To be fair, at one point or another we’ve all forgotten to include an attachment, cross our T’s, or dot our I’s – but I’m going to go out on a limb and assume none of us are sending emails with such great implications. This is an institution founded on academic excellence – take the 20 seconds to read over the damn thing before sending it. 3 sentences – that’s all. Read over 3 sentences and this wouldn’t be a problem. But instead, I’m writing this article and somebody screwed the pooch. Or in this case, screwed the dawgs.
