Will the Big 12 ever decide to add a conference championship game?
That may happen in the future, but Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said during the conference’s spring meetings that the plans for a conference title game will be put on hold.
Bowlsby had previously said that the conference “will probably move in that direction,” but for now that is not the plan.
“I really have been proud of our athletic directors because they chose to respond to not being in the playoff rather than react,” Bowlsby said, via ESPN. “I think they’ve been very thoughtful about it and continue to be thoughtful about it. We all believe that one year is not a long enough window or trial to draw any conclusions.
“We may find ourselves in better shape than some other conferences as a result of our model, not in spite of our model.”
Currently, the Big 12 is the only Power 5 conference not to play a title game.
Many people believe that lack of a title game is what led to TCU and Baylor, who tied for first-place in the conference last season, to be left out of the College Football Playoff.
For the sake of the programs in the Big 12, let’s hope there is a conference championship sooner rather than later.
