A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Florida State Seminoles running back Dalvin Cook on the charge of battery. Mark Schlabach of ESPN reported the development and the Tallahassee Democrat reported earlier today that Cook was under investigation for battery.
Cook is accused of punching a woman “several times” during an argument outside of a local Tallahassee bar. His accuser is not an FSU student and presented photographic evidence of her injuries to State’s Attorney Willie Meggs. Per Meggs, Cook will be charged with misdemeanor battery.
The incident in which Cook was allegedly involved occurred just one day before former Seminoles quarterback De’Andre Johnson punched a woman in the face at another bar in Tallahassee.
Johnson was subsequently charged with misdemeanor battery and suspended from the team indefinitely before being dismissed from the program earlier this week.
Simply put, the timing could not be worse for a program that is still trying to distance itself from a sexual assault investigation that included former quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, who was not charged by Meggs or disciplined by the university after a lengthy investigation. Johnson was caught on video punching a woman in the face, so the university didn’t really have a choice but to dismiss him.
In the case of Cook, while it is still in the early stages, it is just negative publicity that the program does not need.
Given how Cook ran for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns last season, the team’s rushing attack could be facing a huge loss if he is suspended.
