We have all been there. You are just getting out a long and stressful day of classes and head out to your car to head on home to catch up on homework and sleep. Then you see it. The dreaded pink piece of paper slapped onto your windshield: a parking ticket.
Parking tickets are never fun. The fines are usually a ridiculously stupid amount of money and you have to deal with the bitchy ladies behind the glass at the police building who want to be there just about as much as you do. But what if you found out that the full cost of the fine you are paying doesn’t even go towards your school?
One University of North Carolina-Charlotte student found that out and decided to fight back against the “system.”
WCNC in Charlotte reported a story of Stephen Coyle who was fed up with his school’s parking laws as well as what the fine money went to. He received a $110 fine for parking in visitor parking with a student decal, which are usually the best parking spots anyway, and he was pretty upset about it.
“You parked in the visitor parking,” Coyle said. “I parked in the two decks beside that.”
He’s tallied up multiple citations on UNCC’s campus this summer, but it lead to a shocking discovery. State law only lets the school keep 20% of the fines.
“Eighty-percent of your tickets have gone to fund other schools,” Coyle said.
The funding goes to other public schools in the area, which is why he’s been handing out flyers to students.

He decided to do one of the cruelest things I have heard today. He paid the fine in nothing but pennies…11,000 of them. What makes this better is the fact that he stood in the police building and watched the two women spend almost four hours counting the three buckets of pennies he had dropped off.
This is just way too good of a story to be true, but it is. This is almost as good as the time a woman paid her ticket in nothing but one dollar bills…folded into Origami pigs…in a Dunkin Donuts box.
