Although scheduled for a blowout win against Houston, the Louisville Cardinals were matched scoring opportunity after opportunity throughout the entire game as the Houston Cougars pulled away with a game-winning touchdown from Greg Ward, Jr. to DeMarcus Ayers with only three minutes to go in the final quarter.

In one of college football’s best defenses last year in Louisville – ranked third in the FBS allowing 93.7 yards per game – the Cardinals surrendered 236 yards to the Cougars, who spread out the ball among four primary running backs (neither rushed for over 100).
In a scenario similar to Penn State’s loss to Temple last weekend, the Louisville defensive unit also allowed Houston’s offense to convert 11-of-22 third down opportunities, while the Cougs’ offense whipped up over 400 total yards.
Overall, it wasn’t a good day to be a Louisville follower since sneezing out the ball four times to a defense that let offenses get away with 334 yards per game last season.
But that didn’t stop the AAC’s Houston Cougars from partying after following up on a 52-24 beat down to Tennessee Tech last weekend. This time there were more bragging rights – and hips to be shaken – after defeating an ACC preseason favorite in Louisville.
