Wake Forest Defeats Gardner-Webb

Wake Forest’s newly appointed head football coach, Dave Clawson, is off to a successful start for this new 2014 season. Because of the inevitable reconstruction year, Demon Deacon fans were ecstatic about their 23-7 win over Gardner-Webb in their home opener on Saturday, September 6.

Due to severe weather warnings in the area, the Deacs knew they had to be on point from the beginning, racking up points to secure them the win before the impending stadium evacuation. Freshman quarterback, John Wolford, went 30-for-38 for 291 yards passing and two touchdowns. Five minutes into the third quarter, Wolford connected with wide receiver, E.J. Scott, for the first touchdown of his Wake Forest football career, bringing the score to 16-0.

Then, three minutes into the fourth quarter, the Wolford-Scott tag team scored again with a 14-yard throw caught by Scott to bring the Deacs to 23-0. Punter, Mike Weaver, demonstrated his exceptional kicking ability completing three field goals in the first half.

Marquell Lee (LB), Sheldon Lewinson (defensive lineman), Thomas Brown (safety), and Josh Banks (defensive lineman) all had sacks for Wake Forest.

Gardner-Webb scored with a five yard rush made by quarterback, Tyrell Maxwell, with16 seconds left in the game.

Next Saturday the Deacons will travel to Logan, Utah to play Utah State.
