In what has become a common trend this bowl season, the College Football Playoff championship game between the Clemson Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide suffered a ratings dip compared to last year’s Ohio State vs. Oregon matchup.
This year’s championship game scored an overnight TV rating of 15.8 on ESPN.
Last year, Ohio State and Oregon scored an 18.5, which set ESPN’s all-time viewership record.
That was a ratings dip of 15 percent.

The ratings dip could be attributed to Alabama fatigue or the simple fact that the ESPN multicast provided viewers with multiple platforms to watch the game. There were feeds on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNNEWS, WatchESPN and much more.
With viewers spread out over the family of networks, the ratings would naturally take a step back.
Despite that, the 15.8 rating for Monday night’s matchup was a strong rating. Let’s just hope the College Football Playoff committee does something to fix ratings for the semifinals next season.
