ASU Offensive Lineman Edward Sarafin Comes Out

In June, defensive end Michael Sam broke the hypothetical ice for homosexuals in college sports, and since then, the response has been overwhelmingly encouraging.  His bravery and self awareness have opened the door for others in the college sports community to come out and share their true self with the world.

Most recently, Arizona State offensive lineman Edward Sarafin opened up about his homosexuality. Sarafin first informed his teammates before an interview announcing his sexual orientation to the public. Sarafin’s announcement makes him the first openly homosexual player to come out while actively playing a college sport (Sam’s announcement came after he left Missouri for the NFL).

The fifth-year senior has been a reserve offensive lineman for much of his time as a Sun Devil.

When asked about the news release vice president of ASU athletics Ray Anderson said, “The entire athletics department is extremely proud of Chip and is unequivocally supportive of him.”

Arizona State will begin its 2014 campaign at home against Weber State on August 28.
