Dorial Green-Beckham’s Waiver Denied

The NCAA denied the waiver request of Dorial Green-Beckham for immediate eligibility with the Oklahoma Sooners. Green-Beckham transferred to Oklahoma after being dismissed from Missouri for his off the field actions and multiple encounters with the law during his two years in Columbia.

The Sooners were hopeful Green-Beckham would have the chance to shine this season when they filed a “run off waiver” that would possibly allow DGB to play starting this fall. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound powerhouse is and NFL poised player who is promising for the Sooners. The addition of DGB would have completed the one weakness Oklahoma really has, their talent in the receiver slot is somewhat unproven.

With Green-Beckham’s wavier denied, Oklahoma starts the season with only one proven receiver, Sterling Shepard. Shepard had seven touchdowns and 51 receptions for 603 yards this past season. The second-leading returning receiver on the roster is Durron Neal. Neal was a poised All-American when he came to Oklahoma, but there is still high anticipation for him.

Sooners’ receivers coach, Jay Norvell said, “I think we have some real stability with Shepard and Neal on the perimeter.”

Although the denial of Green-Beckham’s wavier was a disappointment to Oklahoma, they are still confident in their team and in holding the preseason No. 4 spot. Even without the extremely talented former Tiger, the Sooners still have the talent to compete for a conference championship and the playoffs this season.

After DGB sits out this year, he still has two seasons of college football eligibility left. However, he was also a top prospect for the 2015 draft. Now, the question is if DGB will ever play for the Sooners or will he try to begin his NFL career next year?

If Oklahoma believed DGB’s intentions were to sit out a year and then head to the draft, they would not have picked him up. The Sooners are counting on Green-Beckham for the 2015 season. Best-case scenario for the Sooners, DGB sticks around for one more year and then enters the 2016 NFL draft.

Oklahoma opens its 2014 season against Louisiana Tech on August 30.
