Texas Christian head coach Gary Patterson announced Wednesday that he will utilize a dual quarterback system during the 2014 season. Heading into the fall Trevone Boykin was the heavy favorite to assume the starting role, but fifth year senior Matt Joeckel decided to use his last season of eligibility at TCU.
This threw a major wrinkle in Patterson’s plans and Boykin’s destiny, and he has since chosen to play both quarterbacks. Joeckel spent the last three seasons as the backup for Johnny Manziel and Ryan Tannehil before making transferring to TCU.
Last season, TCU finished with a 4-8 record, only the second time in Patterson’s 13 seasons that the program finished below .500. The Horned Frogs hope that the two-quarterback system can find success in their second go round as a member of the Big 12 conference.
