Oklahoma State Named J.W. Walsh Starter for Week 1

In just a few days, the Oklahoma State Cowboys will face their toughest test of the 2014 season and leading them on the field will be quarterback J.W. Walsh.  Head coach Mike Gundy announced that Walsh will be under center for the start of Saturday’s contest against the top-ranked Florida State Seminoles.  Walsh was in a heated quarterback battle with Arizona transfer Daxx Garmon, but took the majority of first team snaps during training camp and ultimately won the job.

Walsh earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors in 2012 but did not take a large step forward in the season that followed. The junior quarterback had an inconsistent sophomore campaign, starting five games and throwing for 1,333 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions.

Gundy did not rule out the possibility of seeing both quarterbacks during the game, but Walsh will be the starter.

The Cowboys finished 10-3 during the 2013 season, and if Walsh is able to replicate his play, the Sooners have the potential to represent the Big 12 in the new playoff format when winter comes.
