Q&A With WKU Alum Chaney Means

I got the chance to have a conversation with Western Kentucky women’s basketball player Chaney Means. In high school, Means was a stat stuffing machine. She holds the school records for most steals, most three-pointers in a game, and most consecutive games played. Me and Chaney went to the same high school, and it was always a treat to watch her ball out every game. She always brought 100% effort to the court and she never shied away from the competition.

At Western Kentucky, she won the Sun Belt Conference Championship. With that win, she got a chance to play in the NCAA Tournament but lost in the first round against the fourth-seeded Baylor Bears. Chaney has since graduated from Western Kentucky and is now starting her life in the real world. During her time at Western Kentucky, she finished with 354 points, 56 three-point field goals, and 195 career assists.

I caught up with Chaney to ask her a few questions, answers shared below:

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

Pre season conditioning!

What is your favorite Disney movie?

Finding Nemo

What is your favorite candy?

Hot Tamales

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

Something to do with my character. Compliments about athletics, appearance, etc are nice but when people compliment me on things about my faith or character those mean the most.

What has been one of your greatest accomplishment as an athlete?

Playing in the NCAA Tournament.

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

My grandmother- she was the sweetest and most loving person I know and a prayer warrior for our family for so many years. She passed away a couple years ago but I hope to love people the way she did in a kind and sincere way.

How would you give away $50,000?

My family has been involved with foster care since I was 12 years old. I would love to find a way to give to an organization that supported foster children or use those funds to help support and raise foster kids myself.

What is difficult about your sport?

I think there are a lot of challenging things in not only my sport but many others especially at the collegiate level. You grow up playing the game because you love it and it’s fun but once you play at a high level in college it becomes your job and your time and commitment goes completely to that. I have enjoyed playing basketball at my university but it is a very different college experience than the typical college student.

What is satisfying about your sport?

The most satisfying thing is being a part of something that is bigger than yourself. There is no better feeling than when you have a group of girls who are all playing together for one goal and getting along off the court through the process. My team was fortunate enough to win our conference tournament my senior year and to see all the hard work pay off is what makes all the hard times worth it.

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

I like being outdoors. It doesn’t really matter what it is fishing, hiking, or biking just being outside and with family or friends.

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

I like an underdog story so I’d want to find a team that didn’t mind working hard and being a group of overachievers, and beat teams that no one expected us to beat.

What is your favorite food?

Watermelon

What was the best advice you were ever given?

My dad use to tell me in 20 years people won’t remember if you won or lost but how you treated them and the way you made them feel.
