Why FSU Should Not Make The Playoffs

With a lack of conference competition and only one win against a ranked opponent, I do not think Florida State deserves to play in the College Football Playoff.

No. 3 FSU has yet to lose a game since November 24th, 2012 and that is impressive. Going undefeated last year, and not just winning, but dominating the regular season was also impressive. The Seminoles lost a good bit of talent to the NFL Draft and though undefeated, FSU is far from the best team in the country this season.

If you have watched them recently, you have seen a team that gets outplayed by lower-level ACC teams, and pulls away in the fourth quarter. Currently, No. 22 Clemson is the only ranked team the Seminoles have beaten all season. To be ranked third in the College Football Playoff rankings, I think it’s outrageous.

Take a look at the SEC West. All seven teams are bowl eligible and have yet to lose to a team outside of the SEC. These teams would have no trouble going undefeated in the ACC. The seven teams have beaten up on each other, giving only Alabama and Mississippi State a realistic shot at the playoffs. I have no doubt in my mind that every one of those teams could beat this FSU team. According to Las Vegas Super Book, last place Arkansas would have a great chance at beating FSU.

On the College Football Playoff website, it’s stated that the “best four teams” will play in the semi-finals and the winners will advance to the championship. If the selection committee is going to stick by their guidelines, then Florida State should not be in the playoffs. Records obviously play a huge part in who gets selected in the playoffs. Based on strength of schedule , Florida State is ranked 32nd, while the SEC West takes up spots one through seven. I’m not saying that the SEC has to have two teams in the playoffs, I just want to see the most deserving teams play. Baylor and TCU, who are both one-loss teams, are ranked 10th and 13th on the strength of schedule list.

Don’t get me wrong, Florida State is not a bad team. Despite his antics, Jameis Winston has proved to be an incredible quarterback and they have beaten some good teams, including Oklahoma State, Clemson, and Notre Dame. However, those teams do not match up to the competition that Mississippi State, Alabama, Baylor, TCU, or even most of the two-loss teams have faced. Struggling with Louisville, Boston College, and Miami should not land you a chance to play for the national championship.

Florida State is not necessarily a lock for the College Football Playoffs. They will face their hated rival in the Florida Gators. With nothing left to play for, the Gators will be set out to ruin the Seminoles title chances in Tallahassee. After the Gators, Florida State will travel to Charlotte, NC to take on the No. 16 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets for the ACC Championship. The Yellow Jackets are one of the few remaining teams to run the triple option, which takes lots of preparation.

Florida State will likely be in the inaugural playoffs if they win out. They will get the chance to prove all of the SEC wrong if they are able to take down an SEC giant and win the championship once again.
