It appears that there is no award or high honor that is out of Stanford point guard Chasson Randle’s reach.
Three Pac-12 basketball players named to the Wooden Award midseason top 25 list, with the senior of course highlighting the list. Randle was named to the original Preseason Top 50 list back in November; the list of honorees will be trimmed down to 20 at the start of February, with the Player of the Year Award given in the month of April.
Stanford’s points leader was named Pac-12 Player of the Week to kick off the 2015 season at the start of January, and he continues to put big numbers and push the Cardinal to victories–even against some of the NCAA’s most challenging teams. He is currently averaging a teeam-high 19.3 points per game and is a mere 397 points away from passing alum Todd Lichti as Stanford’s all-time points leader. The Rock Island, Illinois native was first-team All-Pac-12 in 2014 as well as a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree who maintains a 3.30 GPA and shoots 88.4% from the foul line.
Oh, and somewhere in there he still has time to speak to troubled youth. C.L. Brown of ESPN detailed the inspiring story of Randle’s frequent visits to the Scott County Juvenile Detention facility in Iowa.
Randle represents the Pac-12 on the Wooden list along with Deion Wright from Utah and Stanley Johnson from Arizona.
The John R. Wooden Award is an annual honor given by the Los Angeles Athletic Club to two standout college basketball players — one men’s, one women’s — each season. The 26-member election panel makes their selections based on student academics and a player’s all-around contributions to their team both on the court and off. The top ten players on the list are named to the award’s All-American Team which typically follows the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament in March, with the winner — Player of the Year — announced following the NCAA championship game.
