As we get closer and closer to NCAA Regional play, the top teams in college baseball are contending to be regional hosts and National seeds.
Here we’ll take a look at the Top 16 teams each week, which would be the 16 regional hosts come postseason time. There are a couple of big series where a couple of these teams faceoff against each other.
Let’s take a look at how the Top 16 shake out for this week:
1. LSU Tigers (34-6)
LSU is the consensus top-ranked team among all the human polls. The Tigers have only dropped one series this season, and that was to Kentucky at the end of March. Huge series this weekend between LSU and Texas A&M.
2. Texas A&M Aggies (35-5)
TAMU lost their first series of the year this past weekend against Arkansas, but that will be forgotten if they can get two-of-three from LSU this weekend. To make it even bigger for the Aggies, that series is happening in Baton Rouge.
3. UCLA Bruins (28-8)
UCLA has won nine-straight series, including this past weekend against the Cal Bears. UCLA had a bad couple of weekends at the end of the non-conference season, but have taken control of the Pac-12, opening with their best conference record since 1969 at 14-4.
4. Louisville Cardinals (30-9)
The Cardinals are 19-2 in a tough ACC, which is crazy. They have one hard series left for the remainder of the season though, when Florida State visits May 8-10.
5. Florida Gators (31-10)
Even though Mississippi State is having a down year, going into Starkville and getting a series sweep is still really impressive for the Gators.
6. USC Trojans (29-10)
USC’s only series loss this year came to UCLA, and have wins over top teams like Vanderbilt and TCU. It’s very impressive to see how far USC’s program has come in such a short time.
7. Florida State Seminoles (30-12)
Another major national series this week takes place between FSU and Miami. The Seminoles will travel to Coral Gables, and a road series win like that will certainly help the case to make them a top-eight national seed.
8. Miami (FL) Hurricanes (30-11)
Really looking forward to this Miami/Florida State series. It probably decides which Sunshine State team will be the second national seed from that state, with the Gators holding down the other one.
9. TCU Horned Frogs (30-8)
10. Illinois Illini (32-6-1)
11. UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos (28-9)
12. Arizona State Sun Devils (25-11)
13. Vanderbilt Commodores (29-12)
14. Oklahoma State Cowboys (25-12)
15. Missouri Tigers (26-14)
16. Dallas Baptist Patriots (29-8)
Also considered: Missouri State (27-9), Florida Atlantic (31-9), Maryland (27-11), Iowa (26-11)
