The BYU Cougars are currently an independent team and without a conference, but that is something head football coach Bronco Mendenhall would like to see change sooner rather than later.
Mendenhall spoke to BYU announcer Greg Wrubell about the team’s future as an independent and it is clear he wants to join a Power 5 conference as soon as possible.
“I hate to be pinned down, but if someone were to force me, I’d say three years. It has to happen within three,” Mendenhall said, via KSL.com. “Could it go longer than that? Yes, it could. Is it desirable, to me, to go longer than that? The answer is no.
“I don’t think we can (stay independent) indefinitely.”
Not only would joining a major conference help BYU generate more income, but it would allow the team to become more of a force by building a strong resume against quality teams.
Will that eventually happen? It seems like it will thanks to Mendenhall’s motivation, but for now BYU has to try to make things work as an independent.
