The Kennesaw State Owls men’s basketball team now has a big name attached to it. According to Doug Roberson of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the school has hired Bryant assistant Al Skinner to become its new head coach.
Skinner replaces Jimmy Lalathin, who led the Owls to a 10-22 record in the Atlantic Sun last season.
Prior to his job at Bryant, the 62-year-old Skinner was the head coach of the Boston College Eagles for thirteen seasons and of the Rhode Island Rams for nine. He helped BC reach the Sweet Sixteen in 2006 and helped the Eagles win the Big East championship in 2001. As a head coach, he owns a career record of 385-291.
Skinner will now be tasked with righting the ship of a program that has gone 85-212 since transitioning to Division I play in 2005. With schools like North Florida and South Carolina Upstate slowly making the conference more noticeable, he gives the program and conference a veteran presence that could further put it on the map.
The season won’t begin for several months, but this hire makes Kennesaw State a team to keep an eye on despite its lack of success.
