Mint Julep Recipe

The 141st running of the Kentucky Derby takes place on Saturday evening, with a post time of 6:26 p.m. ET.

If you weren’t able to make it to Churchill Downs for the most exciting two minutes in sports, don’t worry, you can still bring the party to your home.

There is one classic drink that everyone who watches or attends the Kentucky Derby embraces: the Mint Julep.

So, if you are setting up your Kentucky Derby viewing party, make sure you have all of the ingredients you need to make the drink everyone will be wanting.

Here is the classic recipe:

2 ounces Four Roses bourbon
1 dash angostura bitters
1/4 tsp demerara sugar
Mint as garnish
Crushed ice

Shake all ingredients then pour into a julep tin filled with crushed ice. Top with a bouquet of fresh mint and serve with a straw.

If you’d like a fruitier taste, roll with the Watermelon Julep.

1 ¼ ounces Bulleit bourbon
½ ounce simple syrup
5 sprigs of fresh mint
6 cubes of fresh watermelon

Muddle simple syrup and watermelon in a mixing glass.

Add mint and press lightly to release oils. Add Bulleit bourbon and mix well with cracked ice.

Stain over crushed ice. Garnish with watermelon and smacked fresh mint.

And for those who are really adventurous and bold, try out The Mile High Julep.

1 3/4 ounces TINCUP American Whiskey
1/2 ounce Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur
1/2 ounce Ginger Syrup
1/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
6 to 8 Mint Leaves

Combine all ingredients in a Julep tin, including hand-clapped mint. Add crushed ice and churn until mixed thoroughly and the outside of the tin has frosted.

Garnish with a large mint sprig and some sugar sprinkled over the mint and the ice.
