After athletic director Sandy Barbour stepped down last June, Mike Williams was ready to prove he was the right man for the job.
It looks like he proved it.
According to Mike Vernon of the San Francisco Chronicle, the University of California is expected to appoint Williams from interim to Cal’s new athletic director.
Williams is a former wrestler at the university and has an impressive financial background.
He worked for Barclays Global Investors before retiring in 2009, according to dailycal.org.
The official news from Cal has not been released.
“If there’s news, it’s coming out of the chancellor’s office,” Williams told Vernon. “If I’m lucky enough to be that person, that’s great. I love serving Cal. I love serving this campus. I think we’ve done a lot of great things in the last 10 months. I’d be happy to keep doing what we’re doing and stay on this trajectory.”
Williams will be in charge of making sure both the football and basketball programs improve after average performances recently.
