One of the top prospects in the state of Ohio, four-star linebacker Brendan Ferns of St. Clairesville, will no longer consider the Ohio State Buckeyes despite being heavily recruited from the team.
The reason? Academics.
According to a report from 247 Sports, Ohio State University did not have the major Ferns was looking for, so he has decided to look elsewhere.
“In the running to be the Saint Clairsville (Ohio) High valedictorian, Ferns didn’t want to sacrifice his dream to be a petroleum engineering major in favor for his football dreams,” the report reads. “Ohio State doesn’t offer anywhere close to the curriculum Ferns was looking for. 247Sports was told that the two parties tried to make it work for a couple weeks but Ferns didn’t get the answers he was looking for.”
You have to appreciate a young man putting academics over athletics. It is refreshing.
With Ohio State out of the picture, LSU, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and West Virginia are all in the mix.
