Skechers Surpasses Adidas in the Shoe Game

The sports footwear market is huge nowadays and quite competitive. Companies like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, and Reebok reach out to star athletes and pay millions to have them rep their product. I’ve seen first-hand the success through their campaigns reflected both in public simply by looking around or through my 14 year old brother whose shoe collection may even impress some NBA athletes. However, when the thought of sports footwear comes to mind the name I would never even consider is Skechers, who, according to the Wall Street Journal, just surpassed Adidas to become #2 in the United States sports footwear market industry.

Yes, it is actually true- I said Skechers. The company is now responsible for 5% of the market with a 19% spike in retail sales last quarter ending in March. They also did $2.4 billion in sales over the last year growing their sales by a whopping 29%. Don’t panic too much though, Nike still commands the market conjoined with their Jordan Brand selling 62% of shoes to the US.

I’m no fashion expert but I think Skechers makes some of the ugliest and unstylish shoes I have ever seen. Needless to say these statistics came as a shock to me. I think I’ve owned one pair in my life and they were Velcro strap kid shoes that would light up as I walked around. I just don’t see how you could see a pair of Skechers sitting next to Nike, Adidas or even Reebok and think hmmm… these are the ones. I’m hoping people are just buying them as a pair of shoes they can mess up in the mud and throw away rather than buying them to actually walk around in public. Adidas or any other shoe company, please step your game up and end this madness!
