BYU Signs 6-foot-7, 322-pound Rugby Player

Friday evening marked yet another strong point for BYU recruiting. 6-foot-7, 322 pound Manase Tu’ungafasi signed with the Cougar football program in the comfort of his hometown in Auckland, New Zealand.

While many players have tried and failed to transfer from rugby to football, Tu’ungafasi has one major thing those others did not. He has size. Serious size. And that is exactly what BYU is trying to build around. He will be the sixth offensive linemen to sign with the Cougars this year.

Amazingly, he will not even be the largest addition to the line with 410 pound Molejai Taukolo Langi committing earlier this year.

Tu’ungafasi is more than just size though. He was named to the 2014 Samoa Under-20 team for the World Championships.

Other schools took notice as names such as Utah and Oregon State were both hoping to land his signature. Last season was slightly derailed by injuries for the Cougars, but this year’s recruiting class has things looking up.
