Well, that certainly didn’t take long.
ESPN is already getting into CFB mode with its “100 things we’re looking forward to in 2015.” That special spot at No.1–drumroll please–goes to the highly-anticipated rivalry between Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh.
The piece, posted Tuesday morning, has a pretty drool-worthy top 10, with the likes of “Shawn Oakman sightings” and the Alabama-Auburn coaching matchup taking high honors. Of course, that all pales compared to the excitement at seeing those split-screen shots on Saturdays of the OSU’s figurehead and Michigan’s eccentric first-year coach.
Critics here on the West Coast–myself included–were quick to point out upon Harbaugh’s departure from the San Francisco 49ers this winter that it would take some time for a truly pure rivalry to spark up between Harbaugh and Meyer. I mean, how can you so quickly replace the Harbaugh-versus-Pete-Carroll “What’s Your Deal?” rivalry in just a couple of months? Those shots of Harbaugh throwing his play cards in the air in digust while Carroll stares blankly into the ether while violently chewing on eight pieces of gum are products of a football feud that wasn’t created overnight.
However, Harbs has already done a bit of jabbing in the OSU head coach’s direction. So, perhaps ESPN, and the rest of us, will get that delightful rivalry sooner rather than later.
