Baylor Bears forward Rico Gathers was arrested yesterday for stealing from a local Walmart. A staff report from the Waco Tribune reported Gathers’ arrest.
On June 1, as a store employee told police, a man he “recognized as Gathers” stole various household items and placed them in a shopping cart before going on his merry way and heading to the parking lot without paying for them.
Police reviewed store security footage before arresting Gathers, who was charged with theft under $500 and released on $1,000 bond.
Baylor has yet to comment or give a statement on Gathers’ arrest, but it doesn’t look good for either party. Gathers is a public figure and if he is indeed guilty of stealing from Walmart, it’s a pure knucklehead move on his part.
This is a young man who led the Bears with 11.6 rebounds per game last season and is about to enter his fourth season with the team, and maybe head to the NBA after that.
Whether or not he did in fact steal the items, this isn’t something to which he wants his name attached going forward.
Campus Sports will update this story as more information comes in and either Baylor or Gathers makes a statement.
