We finally saw a title change at Money in the Bank tonight, as the Prime Time Players managed to defeat two thirds of the New Day and walk away as the new Tag Team Champions.
It was an odd formation of the New Day, who were without usual fighter Kofi Kingston after he competed in the Money in the Bank ladder match earlier in the show. Instead, it was up to Big E and Xavier Woods to defend the belts and it was obvious that Kingston’s dynamic high-flying style was missed.
Darren Young and Titus O’Neil came out to a solid pop, following months of building momentum as a top face tag team and just barely losing to New Day at Elimination Chamber two weeks ago. Young got beat up pretty badly in the opening minutes of the match, but finally managed to tag in O’Neil after he dodged a charging Big E, who went shoulder first into the post. O’Neil came in and quickly established his dominance against Woods, landing several backbreakers over the knee.
Young and Big E tangled before falling out of the ring together, giving O’Neil the perfect opportunity to lift up Woods for a devastating spinebuster and the eventual pinfall win.
As much as yours truly may love the Prime Time Players, however, this seems like an odd title change. The New Day had plenty of heel heat, so why take the belts off of them? The perennial champion Usos are out for a while as Jey Uso recovers from a shoulder injury, as are former champs Tyson Kidd and Cesaro while Kidd recovers from a neck injury.
Either way, the Prime Time Players are over and it will be interesting to see what direction they head in next.
