Teammate says Kristaps Porzingis should be No. 1 pick

All signs point towards Duke Blue Devils big man Jahlil Okafor or Kart-Anthony Towns of the Kentucky Wildcats as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. However, there is one name that few fans are familiar with who has been generating positive buzz: Kristaps Porzingis.

Porzingis has been gaining momentum and is expected to be selected within the top five picks later this month, but his former teammate in Spain, Marcus Landry who now plays for the Milwaukee Bucks, believes Porzingis should be the top selection.

Landry, who played with Porzingis at Cajasol Sevilla in the Spanish ABC league, spoke with Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times about his former running mate.

If Landry’s comments are any indication, Porzingis is in for a great career.

“It sad nobody really knows much about this kid right now because he played in Spain,’’ Landry said. “I think this kid is amazing. Honestly, I think Kristaps should be the No. 1 pick if you’re going to base it off potential. I personally think he’s the best kid in the draft. And I’m not saying that because he’s a friend of mine.

“I know basketball. I’ve been in the NBA; I’ve been around NBA players. I’d tell you if he sucks. But he’s really good. If he goes beyond No. 2, that would be a mistake on some team’s part.’’

Currently, a handful of scouts believe Porzingis could go as high as No. 3 to the Philadelphia 76ers with his lowest selection point coming at No. 5 to the Orlando Magic.

Regardless of where he goes, the front office will be hoping that he is capable of living up to the hype.
