Chinanu Onuaku debuts granny shot at FIBA Championships

Louisville Cardinals rising sophomore big man Chinanu Onuaku only shot 47 percent from the charity stripe last season, but he appears to be making a concerted effort to improve in that area for next season.

In fact, it looks like he turned to basketball history in order to do so.

At the FIBA World Championships, in a game that pitted the United States vs. Iran, Onuaku shot an underhanded “granny” free throw and actually made it, a la Hall of Famer Rick Barry. Considering how Barry made 89 percent of his free throws for his career, perhaps Onuaku’s approach isn’t terrible.

Granted, this is only one free throw, but for even a big man to have as low a free-throw percentage as Onuaku did as a freshman is borderline criminal. If his role is going to expand next year, best for him to do all he can to improve each and every aspect of his game.
