Class of 2017 QB Sam Ehlinger commits to Texas

Class of 2017 quarterback Sam Ehlinger, out of Austin’s Westlake High School, has committed to the Texas Longhorns. Ehlinger announced his decision on his personal Twitter page.

Per 247 Sports, Ehlinger had also received offers from McNeese State, SMU and Houston. Schools including Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma State, LSU and others had also been interested.

The dual threat quarterback will now stay close to home and play for Charlie Strong in a couple of years, and the timing is right since current quarterback Tyrone Swoopes will be graduated by the time Ehlinger arrives on campus.

Ehlinger may have to compete with Class of 2016 commit Shane Buechele, another dual threat quarterback, but he will still have every chance to earn playing time as the Longhorns are rebuilt and reborn under Strong.

Texas opens the season on the road against Notre Dame on September 5.
