UCF wants DB recovering from gunshot wounds to sit out

University of Central Florida defensive back Chris Williams is recovering from being shot in the arm twice at a bar near the University of Florida campus and though he could come back and play after a month of recovery time, Knights head coach George O’Leary wants Williams to sit out the season.

Speaking to John Taylor of NBC Sports’ College Football Talk, O’Leary explained his reasoning.

“With that injury alone, [it] was a eight- to-10 week injury, so I would say, again, I’m leaning more toward medical withdrawal to stop his eligibility so he doesn’t have this year count and bring him back in January,” O’Leary said regarding Williams’ status. “The police are involved with what took place there, so it’s really their response, not mine as far as what transpired.”

It’s hard to argue with O’Leary, as Williams took a redshirt last year but proved to be excellent in UCF’s spring game, posting 10 tackles and an interception that was returned for 52 yards. A former four-star recruit out of Camden County High School in Kingsland, Georgia, about 35 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida, Willliams is an incredible talent, so perhaps it would be better for him to sit out the year and fully recover rather than come back, play and risk re-injuring himself.

But if Williams did come back, that’d surely be a great story.

UCF opens the season at home against Florida International on September 3.
