ESPN Radio fired longtime radio host Colin Cowherd over racist remarks he made earlier this month, but it appears that the network will use a different approach in terms of finding someone to take over his time slot rather than just give it over permanently.
ESPN Media Zone announced yesterday that various radio hosts and/or duos would take over Cowherd’s 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. slot for a week throughout August.
Max & Marcellus of ESPN LA 710 will host from ESPN Radio’s Los Angeles studios the week of August 3. Max Kellerman and Marcellus Wiley host a daily radio show in Los Angeles from 3-7 p.m. PT. They also offer their opinions and viewpoints weekdays on ESPN2’s SportsNation.
Michelle Beadle, host of ESPN2’s SportsNation, and Ben Lyons of ESPNLA and The Players Tribune will host from the Los Angeles studios the weeks of August 10 and 17.
ESPN Chicago 1000’s Waddle & Silvy will host the week of August 24. Former Bears receiver Tom Waddle and Marc Silverman host a daily show in Chicago from 2 – 6 p.m. CT.
ESPN did not specify as to whether or not any of these shows will take over Cowherd’s time slot permanently, but that surely must be at least part of the plan. Radio is a game of ratings, and Cowherd’s are going to be hard to replace. If listeners react to any of these three weeks the way they did Cowherd, ESPN should have no trouble filling his slot at the close of the month.
