Austin Kendall talks OU commitment, championship hopes

Austin Kendall is a four-star quarterback that has committed to the Oklahoma Sooners’ 2016 recruiting class. He is expected to be a future starter under center for the Sooners and there is a lot of excitement surrounding him.

During the 2014 season at Cuthbertson High School in Waxhaw, North Carolina, Kendall threw for 4,461 yards, 49 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Those numbers alone show why the Sooners are so excited about Kendall’s potential for the future and it certainly shows how much talent he has to work with. There are a few areas that he’ll need to improve before hitting the next level, but those improvements will come throughout this year.

At 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Kendall is the prototypical size for a college quarterback. He is not just a passing quarterback either, as he picked up 519 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground last season.

There is absolutely nothing holding Kendall back from being a superstar at Oklahoma. He is a very mature player on-the-field and a very good person off-the-field, in addition to his skills as a football player. His leadership has been obvious throughout his high school career and he is more than ready to take the leap to the college game.

That being said, Kendall decided to take the time to sit down and do an interview with Evan Massey of Campus Sports.

First of all, Kendall was more than happy to share his reasoning for joining the Sooners and explained what the main factors were in his decision.

“The university is among the best in the nation in terms of academics and, of course, the facilities are as good as they get,” Kendall noted. “The history behind the program and the winning tradition, all the national titles, and the coaching staff is unbelievable. I can’t wait to get there in January.”

Some fans may not have seen much of Kendall’s game, but he was more than happy to explain what he will bring to the field.

“I can make all the throws on the field and I’m a leader that wants to win every single down,” he added. “I’m someone who is willing to do anything to help the team win.”

One of the most difficult thing for a quarterback or any player to do is compare their game to another player. Kendall was very thoughtful about his answer, and the NFL quarterback that he chose should excite Oklahoma and their fans even more.

Kendall said, “Aaron Rodgers. He takes control of his team and can make any throw on the field.”

Obviously the comparison to Rodgers is a comparison that he made very humbly, but it is a good comparison. Kendall can make some throws on the run that not many quarterbacks can make, and his vocal leadership and ability to make almost any throw across the field is very similar. He also shared the high goals that he has for his career with the Sooners.

“I want to lead the Sooners to a National Championship win and be a great team leader. I want to have a great career with the Oklahoma Sooners.”

There is no question that Kendall will become a fan favorite with the type of answers that he gave in this interview and he left us with a very nice quote that was directed to the Sooners’ fan base.

“I’m both excited and thankful to get the opportunity to play for such a great program and amazing fans. I look forward to enrolling in January and beginning my college career with the Sooners!”
