Duke Williams leaves scrimmage on a golf cart

The Auburn Tigers had a bit of a scare earlier today when wide receiver Duke Williams was injured and left a team scrimmage on a golf cart. Brandon Marcello of AL.com made the initial report on Twitter as everyone waited with baited breath to find out just what happened.

Fortunately, fortune smiled on Williams as Tom Green of the Opelika Auburn-News tweeted that Williams only tweaked an ankle and that it wasn’t anything to be concerned about. Matthew Stevens of the Montgomery Advertiser later confirmed that as well.

That said, it sounds like Williams is just rusty after only just having been reinstated from a suspension handed down by Gus Malzahn earlier this summer. Though finding out he left a scrimmage on a golf cart certainly must have been scary at first, the fact that he just tweaked an ankle should bring fans, players and coaches a like a sigh of relief. Moreover, it actually makes a lot of sense that he’d be a bit rusty since he was coming to camp late.

After a tremendous 2014 campaign in which he was second on the team with 730 yards and first with 45 receptions and five touchdowns, Williams should look forward to being a key member of Auburn’s offense in 2015.

Hopefully, his ankle issues are behind him in time for the Tigers’ season opener against Louisville in Atlanta on September 5.
