Rick Pitino delivers high praise for freshman Ray Spalding

Forward Ray Spalding is one of the talented freshman players Louisville Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino has coming into the program this year and he has wasted no time catching the attention of his new coach.

In a recent blog post following his team’s trip to Puerto Rico, Pitino delivered some high praise for the freshman forward.

Specifically, Pitino said that Spalding has as much potential as anyone he has ever coached during his time at Louisville. Wow. That has to be music to Cardinals fans’ ears.

While Pitino admitted that Spalding still needs some time to develop into his full potential, the early flashes of a promising talent are there.

“Complex evaluation. Has a similar personality to Larry O’Bannon as a freshman. Introverted and sometimes plays shy on the court. Off the court, outgoing. As I said, complex,” Pitino wrote.

“I will say this, I’ve not seen anyone in my 15 years at Louisville with more potential. Needs time, but when he gets it, look out!”

As for the rest of the team, they still have a ways to go before Pitino is satisfied.

“The rest of the team needs time,” the coach added. “That is not a negative but rather a fact that it is August.”

It will be interesting to see how Louisville continues to improve in the coming months leading up to the season, but there is plenty to be excited about especially with the high praise for the budding young star.
