Buccaneers pleased with Jameis Winston’s football smarts

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to be one of the most intriguing football teams to watch during the upcoming 2015 NFL season. It has been a long time since they have had a lot of excitement surrounding them, but that has changed this year. Most of the excitement has to do with the selection of former Florida State star quarterback Jameis Winston with the number one overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

During Winston’s first career NFL start in Tampa Bay’s opening preseason game, he didn’t look all that great. There were obviously nerves involved, but despite the lackluster performance the Buccaneers are still very pleased with the football intelligence he has shown early on in his NFL career.

“Some guys can be really smart, but he can see it on the field, it gets to his brain and it triggers to his release fast,” offensive coordinator Dirk Kotter said. “He sees the field well. Some guys can be really smart but they don’t see the field very good. He does see the field.”

Winston talked about his younger days and that he has always studied the game and looked for ways to get better.

“Well, ever since I was six, I had a little notebook with coverages and notes on the mental aspect of a game, what it meant to be a leader and what type of attitude you had to have,” Winston said. “When I was young, I always wanted to be great at football.”

Obviously his wish has become a reality and he is set to take a huge stage as one of the league’s best young quarterbacks in 2015. Tampa Bay has gone all in with him in hopes that he can be the franchise quarterback that they have been desperately needing for quite some time. Winston is ready to shoulder that burden, and is out to prove all of his critics and doubters wrong.

Looking ahead at the 2015 season, Winston simply has to play the game that he loves and ignore all of the media that will be surrounding and harassing him. He is going to receive up-and-down comments from everyone around him depending on how he plays each week, but he has to stay grounded and focused on continually improving and playing smart football.

If he can put aside all of the off-the-field distractions, his rookie season should be a major success. There is absolutely nothing holding him back from becoming one of the league’s top quarterbacks in the future, and it all starts with the 2015 season.
