There was some surprising news in the mixed martial arts world on Friday morning, with UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey announcing her next fight would be on Jan. 2 at UFC 195 against Holly Holm.
Many expected Rousey’s rival, Miesha Tate, would get a third crack at the champion so the announcement on “Good Morning America” it was a shock to all.
One person in particular, Miesha Tate’s manager, was even more surprised by the news.
According to Josh Jones of KHI Management, the Rousey vs. Holm announcement blindsided him and Tate was actually unaware she would not get the shot when the news dropped.
“I’m absolutely shocked,” Jones told MMAFighting.com. “I found out just like you did. Very disappointed to hear the news.
“I want to know the reasons behind [the decision]. To not even be given a head’s up is very disappointing. She doesn’t even know yet. She is going to be absolutely shocked.”
Tate was promised a title shot following her win over Jessica Eye in Chicago this summer, so it is understandable that her and her management team would be taken back and disappointed by the news.
Now, we just have to see what is next for Tate.
Perhaps the UFC can make it up to her giving her another big name fight on the Jan. 2 card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Cris Cyborg, anyone?
