The Georgia Bulldogs haven’t won a national championship in football since the 1980 season. That was the same season with legendary coach Vince Dooley was still at the reigns and running back Herschel Walker, the school’s only Heisman Trophy winner, was still churning along in the backfield.
According to Dave Bartoo of College Football Matrix, there is a pretty ridiculous statistic involving the Bulldogs.
Bartoo joined The Paul Finebaum Show Thursday and talked all things football for the upcoming season. ESPN shared the audio clip from the radio show.
Bartoo and Finebaum talked about the College Football Playoff and who has the best odds of getting in, the Big 12 and how jumbled it will be at the end of the season, and, near the end, the SEC East and who will win it.
Bartoo said that it comes down to who wins the Georgia/Tennessee game this season. He believes that Tennessee will get in over the Bulldogs, but that isn’t the craziest thing about his statement.
He added, “Georgia is the only team this century to be a top ten recruiter and a top ten team for NFL Draft picks to not win a national championship game.”
If more Bulldog fans knew that, I’m sure they would fired up and ready to see their team win a championship. This may not be their year, but the Bulldogs sure hope it is.
The team opens the season on September 5 when they host Louisiana-Monroe.
