SummerSlam kicked off with a bang tonight as 12-time World Champion Randy Orton fell to Mr. Money in the Bank, Sheamus.
The match kicked off with the crowd giving its usual “YOU LOOK STUPID!” chant at Sheamus, and he responded in getting up on the announce table to say the same to individual members of the audience. Orton then swept his leg to put him on the table, and the long-brewing war came to light.
The two went back and forth with each other for a good long while, with Sheamus hitting Orton with 10 Beats of the Bodhran and even lock him in the Cloverleaf submission hold. Orton got in a powerslam and an RKO against Mr. Money in the Bank, but that was not enough. In the end, after a failed attempt on a second RKO, Orton found himself on the business end of two Brogue Kicks from Sheamus, who then scored the pinfall victory.
If you were to ask this writer, this all but guarantees that Sheamus will cash in his MITB contract tonight. He’ll be well rested by that match, and it sets him up for at least a short reign as WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Orton, on the other hand, has a path that is less clear. He could either continue feuding with Sheamus and participate in a multiway title match either on television or at the Night of Champions pay-per-view next month, or he’ll go back to upper midcard.
Either way, GREAT way to start off the evening!
