Pig Howard suspended for Vols’ season opener

Tennessee Volunteers head coach Butch Jones announced today that senior wide receiver Alton “Pig” Howard has been suspended for the team’s September 5 season opener against Bowling Green for an unspecified violation of team rules.

The university broke the news on the football team’s official Twitter page.

It’s a devastating blow for the Vols, as Howard led the team last season with 54 receptions for 618 yards. This likely means that fellow senior Von Pearson will be the No. 1 wide receiver for the game, but Tennessee is still waiting to hear whether or not Jason Croom and Vincent Perry will recover from their respective injuries in time to play.

Matt Slovin of The Tennessean also reported that Howard’s suspension is related to an incident that occurred several months ago and not at all recently.

Granted, Tennessee should still be the favorite to beat Bowling Green, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that the Vols will be without their best receiver for one game.

Given how the team is working to improve under Jones and is slowly starting to come out of the shadows, the timing of this could not be worse.
