The University of Washington is ready to take flight with a new naming rights sponsor for its stadium for the next 10 years in Seattle-based airline company, Alaska Airlines. As a result of the new contract, Husky Stadium will adopt new namesake for its football field, later to be dubbed Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium.
No other university has paired up with a corporate sponsor quite like this before as an existing relationship is renewed for 10 years and $41 million.
Pre-dating to 2011, Alaska Airlines and the University of Washington shook hands on a five-year deal worth a peasantry $700,000. Now with a lucrative deal in place, the Seattle campus isn’t the only one untouched since both the Tacoma and Bothell campuses will receive treatment from Alaska Airlines.
U-Dub Athletic Director Scott Woodward:
“I am thrilled that we can expand on a local connection and enhance a long-standing relationship with a Seattle company who shares our values so deeply. As the costs of funding a first-class student-athlete experience continue to rise, it is critical that we seek new and creative funding opportunities with partners who share our values, and I am pleased because that is exactly what we have done with Alaska Airlines. This exciting new agreement will work directly to fund our student-athlete experience and allow us to stay in front of the rising costs of funding student-athlete recruitment, scholarship, travel and competition.”
With Alaska Airlines operating mainly on the west coast for service, it’s applied a fleet of its Embraer jets with collegiate liveries, including Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State and has also enrobed its Boeing 737s in Disneyland decals.
