Kansas students know little about their football team

Can you name three members of your school football? Seems like an easy question unless of course you’re a student at Kansas University.

University Daily Kansan sports reporter Kirsten Peterson found out how little KU students know about their team when she walked around Jayhawk Boulevard asking students to recall the names of three football players.

Many of those asked immediately admitted they could not. One student named  a player who does not play for the Jayhawks. Two other students struggled to even name football positions.

A group of three girls came the closest to answering the question, correctly identifying two players.

Things got harder for the students when Peterson asked them to name KU’s new Head Coach David Beaty. They also struggled to recall the number of wins the team pulled off last season.

Unfortunately the KU’s football program has struggled for a number of years. It’s recent history includes several fired head coaches and a three-year, 27-game Big 12 Conference losing streak. The Jayhawks ended last season with a 3-9 record.

The university hired Beaty, a former Texas A&M receivers coach, last December to turn around the team. Beaty worked with the team in 2008 and 2011 during which time “former Kansas receiver Dezmon Briscoe set the single-season school record for receiving yards (1,407) in 2008 and Kerry Meier became the first and only Jayhawks receiver to catch 100 passes in a season, hauling in 102 in 2009″ according to ESPN
