Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes in same league as Mariota?

Unless you’re a Texas Tech Red Raiders fan, you’ve probably never heard of Patrick Mahomes, the team’s quarterback. Needless to say, the sophomore has talent.

In Texas Tech’s season opener against Sam Houston State, Mahomes completed 33 of 53 pass attempts for 425 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 48 yards on five carries. Since assuming starting duties midway through last season, Mahomes has thrown for 1,972 yards and 20 touchdowns.

But allow me to present another statistic, thanks to Max Olson of ESPN. Since November 15 of last year, Mahomes has accounted for 1,863 total yards.

What makes this number significant? Well, only Marcus Mariota accounted for more.

It may seem like an odd comparison, putting Mahomes in the same league as a man who won a Heisman Trophy and brought his team to a national championship game, but the numbers don’t lie. This young man has an excellent arm and is a fine fit for Red Raiders coach Kliff Kingsbury’s offense.

Just where Mahomes ends up professionally remains to be seen, but one thing is certain. He’s definitely someone to watch over the course of the 2015 season.
