After his Maryland Terrapins suffered a stunning loss to Bowling Green on Saturday, coach Randy Edsall has decided to switch quarterbacks. Per Kevin McGuire of NBC Sports’ College Football Talk, Perry Hills is being bumped to third on the depth chart while Caleb Rowe will assume starting duties with graduate transfer Daxx Garman as his backup.
This isn’t at all a surprise, as Hills completed just 15 of 30 throws over the weekend for 168 yards, though he did manage two touchdowns. However, his passer rating in the red zone this season is a flat 0.00, so Edsall obviously feels a change is necessary as pressure mounts in what is already being called a step-back year for the Terps since so much talent from the 2014 squad was lost.
Sadly, Rowe is not much of an improvement. In highly limited action this season, he has completed just 1 of 4 pass attempts for 17 yards and two interceptions. Barring a grand change on his end, don’t be shocked if Garman ends up seeing some time under center in the future.
Maryland’s next test is on Saturday at home against the AAC’s South Florida Bulls.
