Freshman DT Adam McLean leaves Maryland, plans return

A defensive tackle fresh out of Quince Orchard high school, Adam McLean, who chose Maryland over Ole Miss, Penn State and Washington State, has left the campus in an apparent squabble with academics.

It’s a shock-and-awe moment for both parties since McLean did disclose his poor performance in the classroom while at Quince Orchard, but faculty at the University of Maryland slapped McLean with what they summed up as “an initial eligibility issue.”

Citing a hunger to build his academic strength, McLean met with a counselor, who outlined a proper academic plan for the Maryland native, and once figured out, McLean cheered his way to College Park.

“One of the biggest reasons I closed on Maryland was because they care about you. I told Edsall learning new concepts in the classroom takes a little more time for me than other people, and he said that all the athletes will get the support they need to get good grades. I met with my academic counselor every week before I even got to Maryland and she told me how she was going to help me every step of the way. That just made me feel like I was wanted, like I was more than just a player for them. Edsall really cares about his guys.”

Recruited by Randy Edsall, whose football program ranked eighth in the Big Ten concerning recruiting, McLean was Edsall’s top priority in the Class of 2015 as the 6-foot-1, 315 pounder ranked 124th overall and 14th in the nation among defensive tackles.

Regardless of the setback, McLean reaffirms the Terrapin community that once the issue is squared away, he’ll make it back to Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
