In what probably comes as a surprise to nobody, LSU running back Leonard Fournette has been named the National Offensive Player of the Week. This comes after he ran for a career-high 228 yards and three touchdowns against Auburn on Saturday, effectively putting him at the forefront of the Heisman Trophy race.
You knew Fournette was going to have a big day when his first run of the game was a 71-yarder that led to a Brandon Harris sneak play for the team’s first touchdown just 1:41 into the contest. According to the Football Writer’s Association of America, Fournette was given the honor of being the AutoNation National Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.
“I was just feeding off of the crowd, the loud noises,” Fournette said. “Coach Frank (Wilson) told me to get in that zone. The O-line said they were counting on me, so I put the team on my back.”
LSU head coach Les Miles was also pretty excited for Fournette following the game.
“I’ll tell you one thing, Leonard sure likes playing,” Miles said. “He did some things today where I said, ‘Wow.’ He took one of their tackles and threw him into another tackle and still came out in the other end. When you have a big back who can really move his feet, at times it can be very difficult to tackle him.”
Fournette is currently leading the FBS in rushing yards per game at 193.5. To be fair, the Tigers have only played two games, but he has still been dominant in both. I’d expect more of the same as LSU travels up to Syracuse this Saturday.
