Notre Dame DT Jay Hayes benched for negative tweets

Notre Dame defensive tackle Jay Hayes will not play this weekend against UMass due to the fact that coach Brian Kelly has opted to bench him for negative tweets about the coaching staff that Hayes posted on Wednesday. The tweets have since been deleted, but Arman Walia of Bleacher Report has posted a screen shot of them.

Needless to say, Hayes tweets read as follows, and it’s no surprise that Kelly benched him:

Granted, Hayes could have said far worse, but it’s the principle of the matter at this point. He has to realize that as a college athlete, he is a public figure and everything he does from his play on the field to eating a sandwich for lunch away from the field is going to be looked at under the microscope.

Though his tweet was arguably tame, he should have handled any concerns he had privately.

A former four-star recruit out of Brooklyn’s Poly Prep, Hayes posted two tackles in two games last year and has yet to post any stats this season. Hopefully, his benching helps him grow up a little bit.

Notre Dame and UMass are set to kick off in South Bend at 3:30 p.m. on NBC.
