Merril Hoge to undergo heart surgery

ESPN’s Merril Hoge will go on a leave of absense to undergo heart surgery, the NFL analyst announced on Monday.

Hoge made the announcement while on “NFL Primetime” with Trey Wingo and Tim Hasselbeck. Awful Announcing captured the clip from the broadcast when the announcement was made.

Hoge plays it cool in the announcement, referring to his absense as “taking a bye week.”

ESPN has addressed Hoge’s leave on the home page of its website:

Merril is having heart surgery to repair a vessel. The procedure has been planned for several weeks. His health is strong and he has great doctors. He expects to make a full recovery and will be out several weeks. We wish Merril a speedy recovery and look forward to having him back on our NFL coverage later this fall.
