The No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks’ win over No. 2 Oklahoma at Allen Fieldhouse last night was a spectacle to see, so much that it brought in record ratings numbers on WatchESPN.
According to a report, the game not only drew a 1.9 overnight rating (the highest-rated Big Monday Big 12 game in ESPN history), but the 295,000 viewers on WatchESPN made it the most-watched game ever on the app.
The Kansas City market also drew the highest overnight rating at 16.8.
This isn’t at all a surprise, as the game was a barnburner from start to finish. Both teams traded baskets and no lead was ever safe. Were it not for an Oklahoma turnover in the final seconds of the last overtime, the Sooners very well could have won. To make a pro wrestling reference, this was an absolute Iron Man match of a game, and also the first multi-overtime contest between the top two teams in the nation since UCLA and N.C. State faced off in 1974.
Needless to say, in terms of games set to be broadcast nationally for the rest of the season, this contest raised the bar tremendously.
